The occurrence of instantaneous outbursts of coal are rare in Australian underground coal mines since the introduction of gas content thresholds and the application of outburst hazard management plans.

GeoGAS plays a leading role with our fast desorption method of gas content testing and the setting of safety thresholds through the development of the GeoGAS DRI (desorption rate index). The desorption rate index is an integral part of our fast desorption method and is reported with each gas content test. Currently a DRI of 900 is the threshold below which the outburst risk is acceptable.
